This company originated from the Manchester and Leeds Railway, opened in 1841, and gained it's title with the amalgamation of other smaller lines in 1847. The headquarters were at Hunts Bank Manchester, with the works at Horwich, the Company ranking fifth in size of receipts of the Pre-Grouping Railways with a route mileage of 600. It amalgamated with the London Midland & Scottish in 1923.
The crest consists of the arms of Lancaster and York with the red and white roses entwined below.
