Information on Highley Station - Members Day 30th March 1996

==================================================

You can help us to keep Highley as you see it today, a station as it was in the golden age of rail travel.

Highley Station, like many other stations has won awards for its restoration and continuing level of appearance, but Highley is unique in its atmosphere and authenticity. Highley has been used on many occasions for television and film locations, on gala days the station can handle freight trains and recreate the movements of days long-gone on the modern railway system.

The small and dedicated team are always looking for assistance on a practical level, be it on the platform or around the site. Even if you consider you are an armchair supporter or can only spare a few days a season, we would offer you a friendly welcome and plenty of interesting activities.

There are a wide variety of tasks to keep the station running, on a quiet day the station needs booking office staff, platform staff, kiosk staff and maintenance staff, on a busy day or gala the station requires the services of two dozen people. We also have one or two projects for the 1996 season, a new workshop and the re-furbishment of the old workshop into a volunteers mess.

We are known as the friendly station, and between trains we discuss days past and put the world to rights. The staff also has social meetings throughout the season with Bar-B-Que's, film shows, we also produce our own newsletter, the Highley Fly.

Do not be put off by having no experience, we all started that way, by sharing our knowledge we have undertaken many tasks which on first sight have looked impossible. Working at Highley is a good stepping stone to other areas within the railway, many of our staff are also signalmen, guards, TTI's and even loco crew. A typical list of task we regularly undertake at Highley in the season:-

     Gardening - Our flower beds and hanging baskets are known through the line.
     Station staff - Selling tickets, assisting passenger, sending trains away safely.
     Kiosk - Serving in our small kiosk a range of light refreshments.
     Maintenance - Painting, brickwork, plastering, electrical, plumbing, carpentry.
     Gala days - Safety of public, car park, shunting, brake van ride supervision, tour guide.
     Heavy Gang - Trench or foundation digging, concreting, resleepering crossings, etc.

Variety is also a feature of station life, one minute you can be chatting to a passenger, the next fighting lineside fires, the next shunting wagons or minding steam locos while the crew has lunch, all in a days work at Highley. That is enough of the hard sell, please enjoy your day on the line and feel free to ask any questions of the staff on duty, they will only be too willing to chat. Why not visit Highley station again shortly....

If you would like to join the team at Highley please fill in the slip below and hand it in to either the signal box or booking office, we will be in contact with you shortly..
